Scary Skoda Instagram Competition
Lightcliffe is launching its first Halloween photo competition this year, with customers being asked to create a scary scene involving their car and post the pics on Instagram. Every photo will be entered into a prize draw, with a £50 Amazon voucher being first prize and runners up being given a “Witches Brew” mug.
The origins of Halloween are believed to date back over 2000 years and this ancient festival is one of the longest standing traditions in the UK calendar, so it seemed only right that we do our bit to join in the fun.
Attributed to the ancient Celts living mainly in the North, they celebrated Nov 1st as their New Year’s Day and along with returning all the flocks and herds to the fold for Winter, they also believed that the souls of the departed would return on the previous evening. This slightly unnerving element of the tradition puts some context into other oft used terms such as “All Souls” and “All Hallows” …. and of course all the spooky costumes that we dust off for the night once a year!
More modern interpretations have developed over the centuries, not least the kids’ favourite, “Trick or Treat” which came from across the pond, and the pumpkin lanterns which originated in Ireland using large potatoes or turnips.
If we could take a time machine back to those original Halloween nights, I doubt the Celts would have taken too kindly to a “trick” at the cave entrance, but a £50 Amazon voucher would certainly have paid for a few treats!
